Energy Sources

1. Energy

While energy is all around us, we can rarely touch it or feel it or touch it.  Try to reach out and grab a handful of sunshine, can you feel the heat and the energy? However, to really capture the really power of this energy you would have to go inside your body to see how the skins cells are reacting.

The only way to capture the true potential of any energy source is to have to right way to process that energy. If you have gasoline, it's basically worthless unless you have an engine to process it and use it. You need the proper way to break that energy down and produce motion.

For a nice website that explains the many forms, dynamics and uses of energy, click here.

2. It is important for us to understand the two types of energy that exist around us.

Some types of energy are renewable meaning that they are natural and can will always be present. The wind and sun are examples of renewable energies that are always available to us. Other forms of energy are non-renewable which means that they could be here one day and gone the next.  Two examples of non-renewable energies are oil and coal.  We must be careful how we use these forms of energy because one day they could completely disappear from the face of the earth.

3. One important part of understanding the things we read is to know what particular words mean in the context of the story.  Think about some of the vocabulary words that we are studying this week. For example the word 'shoulder' can have different things depending on the context.  In one story, shoulder can mean a part of the body between the neck and the upper arm. However, in another sentence the word shoulder can mean to carry or haul a load. Therefore, we must pay attention to all of the words in a story so that we will understand the entire context of the story.  Try this interactive website about Context Clues

Reading Comprehension

Jerry the Beaver

Jerry the beaver is a very good beaver. Jerry made his house out of wood. Jerry built his house in the water because he likes to eat fish. He is a very hard working beaver and has made the biggest beaver house in the forest! His house was so big that all the fish in the river would swim right into his house. Jerry was very happy because he had a nice big house and all the fish he could ever want.

Now, Jerry was not the only beaver in the forest. There were many other beavers in the woods and many other animals in the forest who also liked to eat fish. All the other animals liked Jerry but they didn’t like that he was keeping all the fish to himself. So they didn’t ask Jerry to come to the Big Forest Party held every year! This made Jerry sad so he stayed home and ate his fish all alone in his big house.

In the middle of the party the animals noticed there were only a few fish left to eat.

“We will have to get more fish!” said Doug the Skunk. The other animals agreed. So, Doug and a few others made their way to the river but there were no fish in it because they had all flopped into Jerry’s house. As the small group walked upstream they heard someone yelling for help! They rushed to see who was in trouble!

As they ran they could hear that it was coming from Jerry’s house! Doug and his friends burst into Jerry’s house and there were fish everywhere!

“Jerry! Where are you, Jerry?” they shouted. “I’m under the fish! Help me!”

Doug dove into the pile of fish and found Jerry’s tail sticking up. They all grabbed it and pulled him out of the pile of fish!
“Thank you so much! I’m sorry for keeping all the fish for myself.” Jerry said. “I guess I got what I deserve.”

“It’s okay Jerry, you’re safe now. Just come back to the party with us!” “Do you really mean it?” asked Jerry. Just then, there was a knock at the door. It was all the other animals! “FISH!” They all exclaimed. And all the animals rushed into the room and began to party around the big pile of fish. The animals had such a great time in Jerry’s big house and they all had plenty of fish to eat.

“It kinda stinks in here!” said Doug. “Yes it does, Doug. Yes it does.”
