Matter Matters

1. What's in a name?  Think of what a name means and why we have differernt names for different things.  What are some names of your favorite movie characters or book characters.  Now, what do these names mean, or why do you like them so much.

Write a good paragraph about what name to give one of our classroom fish. If you want to name more than one fish you will have to write separate paragraphs. The one who writes the bes explanation and details about why we should give that name to that fish will win.

2. In our next round of science projects we are going to look at the idea of matter. In just one brief statement, we are going to learn that, "matter matters".  So, what are some of the familiar states of matter that we find around us in the room?    With your table mates, make a list of all the different types of matter around the room.

In our experiments we are going to discuss the process when matter changes states.  We all know how water can change from a liquid to a solid, but have you ever seen water change from a liquid into a gas? Or how about a solid changing into a different type of solid? Does anyone like popcorn?

One other important thing to talk about when it comes to matter is the importance of recycling.  This process helps us to reuse certain types of matter. Think back to our lessons on photosynthesis. The CO2 that is put out as waste is sucked up by the plants and then turned into oxygen. In the same way, many types of trash can be collected, processed and turned in to something new.
