Keeping Our Words Organized

1. Subject and Predicate

Let's keep all of our words straight.  Remember that each sentence needs to have a subject, a verb and a predicate.

We know very well that a noun is person, place or thing.  It is pretty clear in our writing that know all about verbs. They are actions.

Now, what exactly is a predicate? A predicate is what modifies the noun.  The predicate provides information about the subject, such as what the subject is, what the subject is doing, or what the subject is like.  A few examples will help us understand this.

  • She dances(verb only predicate)
  • Ben reads the book. (verb + direct object predicate)
  • She listened to the radio. (verb + adjunct predicate)
  • She met him in the park. (verb object adjunct predicate)

Play the Sink or Swim game to see how challenging it can be to identify the subject and predicate in each sentence.

2. Reducing Fractions

Reducing fractions is the final step in coming up with the right answer to your math problems.  Remember that if you skip with final, yet very important step, your answer will be marked wrong.

Remember the few simple rules that we covered in class. Can the top number divide into the bottom number? Can you divide two or three into both the top and bottom number? Finally, look to see if there is a common number, or factor, that divides into both the top and bottom numbers. Which rule for reducing fractions applies to the picture on the right?

Try this little game to work on reducing fractions.

3. Area and Perimeter Assistance

For the past few days we have been working out problems for area and perimeter.

4. Advertising and Making Money

During our lesson about free enterprise we discussed the importance of a business making money and paying taxes.  What we need to discuss next is the process by which a business reaches the greatest amount of customers possible.  This process of reaching out to others is called advertising.
